S. in Opposite Directions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While Solar Impulse prepares for a third leg of its Across America flight, two intrepid motorcyclists are on their way or preparing to depart on similar, but ground-bound traversals.<\/p>\n<p>Terry Hershner reported on his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lifeoffthegrid\">Life Off the Grid<\/a>\u201d Facebook page, \u201cOn the edge of the Pacific Ocean, moments from Mexico, officially leaving the west coast at 1:40 am Friday May 31st.\u201d\u00a0 By Saturday afternoon, he was well past El Paso, scurrying at the 70 mph he\u2019s been maintaining through the trip so far, but only when he\u2019s moving.\u00a0 Three incidents have brought him to a stop for varying periods.\u00a0 One unintentional \u201coff-roader\u201d near Gila Bend, Arizona tied up the eastbound lane for an hour while \u00a0police removed his vehicle from the road.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7804\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7804\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7804\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7804\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7804\" title=\"Hershner zero-s-vetterized-628\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Hershner-zero-s-vetterized-628-528x330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Hershner-zero-s-vetterized-628-528x330.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Hershner-zero-s-vetterized-628-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Hershner-zero-s-vetterized-628.jpg 628w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terry Hershner on his Zero motorcycle with a &#8220;sit-down&#8221; Vetter fairing that doubles the mileage of the unmodified bike<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Outside Lourdsburg, New Mexico in the early morning, he texted, \u201cGoing \u2018Zero\u2019 mph for the last 45 minutes. A drunk driver hit the bridge and the highway patrol shut down I-10 so a life flight helicopter could land. This is the third time this trip the freeway has come to a halt! I didn&#8217;t plan on these occurrences when I planned to cross the US in 3 days. It may take 4. How disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He should be in Florida by Monday, stopping only (aside from mayhem not of his own making) to plug his bike into two 220-Volt chargers and get a quick nap.<\/p>\n<p>His mount, a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeromotorcycles.com\/?utm_source=microsoft-ads&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=MSA-C-NA-US-Electric%2BTerms\"> Zero Motorcycle<\/a> with two battery packs and an extreme Vetter fairing, goes, \u201c200+ miles at highway speeds vs. 43 miles stock. He&#8217;s doubled up on battery and the fairing more than doubles range,\u201d as one of his Facebook friends explains.\u00a0 Working with Craig Vetter, Terry has reduced drag and improved riding comfort even in an \u201copen cockpit\u201d mode.<\/p>\n<p>To show the possibilities with fairings, a fully faired 125-cc motorcycle from Vetter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.craigvetter.com\/pages\/470MPG\/high%20mileage%20fairing.html\">achieved 477 mpg<\/a> on one economy run in 1985.\u00a0 The molds were created in 1983 and are still used to create slippery, aircraft-like shapes for eco-riders.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7805\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7805\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7805\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7805\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7805\" title=\"vetter 4-high-mileage-fairings\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vetter-4-high-mileage-fairings-528x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vetter-4-high-mileage-fairings-528x267.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vetter-4-high-mileage-fairings-300x152.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vetter-4-high-mileage-fairings.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7805\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vetter fairings like that of 477-mile-per-gallon, 1985 eco-motorcycle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A second team from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Moto-Electra-Racing\/110022072362813\">Moto-Electra Racing<\/a> will set out to make the same run in the opposite direction, but in only three days.\u00a0 The competitive team will push the limits in its attempt.\u00a0 As reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridermagazine.com\/top-stories\/moto-electra-racing-to-attempt-coast-to-coast-record-for-electric-vehicles.htm\/#.UaKhRF_J_lw.facebook\">Rider Magazine<\/a>, \u201c\u2019We will travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean using only the batteries in the vehicle,\u2019 explained Brian Richardson, the manager of Moto-Electra Racing. \u2018The event will conclude on the Santa Monica Pier in California.
