{"id":7913,"date":"2013-06-23T13:43:20","date_gmt":"2013-06-23T20:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7913"},"modified":"2013-06-23T13:45:54","modified_gmt":"2013-06-23T20:45:54","slug":"24-hours-of-le-mans-2013-previewing-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/24-hours-of-le-mans-2013-previewing-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"24 hours of Le Mans 2013: Previewing the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans ended Sunday morning with hybrid racers taking the first five places.\u00a0 Audi\u2019s R18 e-tron Quattro took first, third and fifth places, with Toyota\u2019s TS030 taking second and a well-earned fourth place.\u00a0 The winner averaged over 149 mph for the 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wikipedia, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audi_R18#R18_e-tron_quattro\">Audi\u2019s\u00a0R18 e-tron quattro<\/a>\u00a0is a hybrid version of the R18 ultra, with a Williams Hybrid Power-designed\u00a0flywheel accumulator system\u00a0for energy storage which delivers 500\u00a0kiloJoules (about 10.8 horsepower for one second) to the front wheels via an electric motor, giving the car four (quattro) wheel drive. The system, as per the regulations, is only available at speeds above 120\u00a0km\/h (75\u00a0mph).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7920\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7920\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7920\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7920\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7920\" title=\"2013-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro_100424514_l\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/2013-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro_100424514_l-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/2013-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro_100424514_l-528x351.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/2013-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro_100424514_l-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/2013-audi-r18-e-tron-quattro_100424514_l.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Audi dominated much of the 2013 Le Mans with its Diesel\/mechanical flywheel hybrid vehicles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The car is fitted with a smaller 58 liter (15.3 U. S. gallon) fuel tank, which might account for some of the 34 pit stops for the winning entry, despite lower fuel consumption promised by the hybrid system.<\/p>\n<p>The e-tron has six driver selectable automatic modes on the steering wheel, allowing short bursts of power when accelerating from corners.\u00a0 A sophisticated form of traction control, it can be set for wet weather and other track conditions to take full advantage of the briefly-added horsepower.<\/p>\n<p>Toyota used a battery-type hybrid for its TS030, achieving what they described as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toyotahybridracing.com\/toyota-racing-earns-le-mans-podium\/\">an emotional runners-up finish<\/a> in the Le Mans 24 Hours after a rollercoaster race which saw drivers and team overcome immense challenges.\u201d<a style=\"text-align: center;\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7921\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7921\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7921 aligncenter\" title=\"ToyotaTS030PaulRicardLaunchFebruary192013-T1\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ToyotaTS030PaulRicardLaunchFebruary192013-T1-528x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ToyotaTS030PaulRicardLaunchFebruary192013-T1-528x280.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ToyotaTS030PaulRicardLaunchFebruary192013-T1-300x159.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/ToyotaTS030PaulRicardLaunchFebruary192013-T1.jpg 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7921\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 538px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Toyota&#8217;s gasoline\/electric hybrids gave Audi an excellent contest throughout the race<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>The #7\u2019s fourth place finish was perhaps the most satisfying, since it experienced \u201closs of fuel pressure early in the race, a slow in-lap to conserve fuel and two and two precautionary tire changes when sensors indicated slow punctures,\u201d according to Toyota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith just over an hour to go, the #7 was in a thrilling battle for third until a very heavy rain shower made track conditions virtually impossible. Nicolas could do little to prevent his TS030 HYBRID sliding off the track and into the barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Nico bravely brought the car back to the pits and superb work from his crew repaired the heavy damage to the front bodywork and suspension within 30 minutes. Will Leaf drivers someday put Le Mans winner stickers on their vehicles?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The usual refrain, \u201cJust wait until next year,\u201d may not be so plaintive this year, as Nissan prepares its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2013\/06\/21\/nissan-shows-off-le-mans-prototype-says-its-worlds-fastest-el\/\">ZEOD (zero emissions on demand) three-wheel race<\/a> car for 2014.\u00a0 The basic configuration, introduced at last year\u2019s race, was doing quite well until a spectacular crash took it out of contention.\u00a0 Details on how \u201celectric\u201d next year\u2019s car will be await disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>The Garage 56 entry this year was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greengt.com\/en\/greengt-h2.php\">GreenGT, a hydrogen-powered car<\/a> deemed too early in its development to show its true potential, and withdrawn.\u00a0 Garage 56 is a slot reserved for new cars with unique technology.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7918\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7918\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7918\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7918\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7918\" title=\"GreenGT-H2\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/GreenGT-H2-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/GreenGT-H2-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/GreenGT-H2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/GreenGT-H2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GreenGT H2-fueled racer withdrawn from this year&#8217;s race, but a hopeful for next year.
