{"id":7944,"date":"2013-06-29T13:16:25","date_gmt":"2013-06-29T20:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7944"},"modified":"2013-06-30T22:12:59","modified_gmt":"2013-07-01T05:12:59","slug":"soy-beans-not-just-for-tofu-anymore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/soy-beans-not-just-for-tofu-anymore\/","title":{"rendered":"Soy Beans \u2013 Not Just for Tofu Anymore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shilpa and twin sister Shweta Iyer have been working on splitting water to extract hydrogen for many years.\u00a0 In November, 2012 the Port Jefferson Station high school students won regional finalist honors in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science &amp; Technology, and netted $1,000 each.\u00a0 They were awarded the Grand Prize in the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northshoreoflongisland.com\/Articles-Features-i-2013-05-23-96157.112114-sub-Comsewogue-students-recognized-for-energy-research.html\"> Long Island Science and Engineering Fair<\/a> in March, and were sent to Phoenix, Arizona in May to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where they won fourth place and $500 each.\u00a0 Their winnings go into college funds which they will invest in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>What has won these young women international recognition?\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s their work in creating a catalyst for the production of hydrogen \u2013 from literally dirt cheap material that advisor James Muckerman credits with being, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/fuelcellsworks.com\/news\/2013\/04\/26\/recipe-for-low-cost-biomass-derived-catalyst-for-hydrogen-production\/\">the best performing, non-noble-metal-containing hydrogen evolution catalyst yet known<\/a> \u2013 and even better than bulk platinum metal.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7946\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7946\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7946\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7946\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7946\" title=\"mosoy\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/mosoy-528x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/mosoy-528x279.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/mosoy-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>This illustration depicts the synthesis of a new hydrogen-production catalyst from soybean proteins and ammonium molybdate. Department of Energy\u2019s Brookhaven National Laboratory as part of an internship program under the guidance of chemist Wei-Fu Chen.\u00a0 Working with James Muckerman, Etsuko Fujita, and Kotaro Sasaki, they explored ways of using sunlight to develop alternative fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Brookhaven\u2019s newsletter explains, \u201cTheir ultimate goal is to find ways to use solar energy\u2014either directly or via electricity generated by solar cells\u2014to convert the end products of hydrocarbon combustion, water and carbon dioxide, back into a carbon-based fuel. Dubbed \u201cartificial photosynthesis,\u201d this process mimics how plants convert those same ingredients to energy in the form of sugars. One key step is splitting water, or water electrolysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7948\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7948\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7948\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7948\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7948\" title=\"brookhaven team\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/brookhaven-team-528x339.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/brookhaven-team-528x339.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/brookhaven-team-300x192.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/brookhaven-team.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wei-Fu Chen, Shweta Iyer, James Muckerman, Sasaki Kotaro, Etsuko Fujita, and Shilpa Iyer at Brookhaven National Laboratories<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sasaki expanded on the idea.\u00a0 \u201cBy splitting liquid water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen, the hydrogen can be regenerated as a gas (H2) and used directly as fuel. We sought to fabricate a commercially viable catalyst from earth-abundant materials for application in water electrolysis, and the outcome is indeed superb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Usually this type of catalysis requires high-priced materials such as platinum, at $1,345 per troy ounce.\u00a0 The Iyer twins found an amalgam of soy beans and molybdenum salt (MoSoy) made a better-performing option.<\/p>\n<p>Soy beans cost about $12.00 per 60-pound bushel, or about 20 cents a pound \u2013 certainly an incentive to explore their energy-producing abilities outside of teriyaki.\u00a0 Molybdenum costs $10.52 a pound, less than a dollar per troy ounce, or about 1\/1,500<sup>th<\/sup> the cost of platinum.<\/p>\n<p>This excited their lab partners, who see commercial reality at the end of this rainbow.\u00a0 Etsuko Fujita, head of the artificial photosynthesis group in the Brookhaven Chemistry Department, sees MoSoy as \u201cA very promising route to making a carbon-containing fuel is to hydrogenate carbon dioxide (or carbon monoxide) using solar-produced hydrogen,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peering through high-resolution transmission microscopes, Brookhaven scientists and the twins observed the anchored MoSoy nanocrystals on 2D graphene sheets.\u00a0 They found that, \u201cThough not quite as active as commercially available platinum catalysts, the high performance of graphene-anchored MoSoy was extremely encouraging to the scientific team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brookhaven elaborates on where this research might go.\u00a0 \u201c\u2019The direct growth of anchored MoSoy nanocrystals on graphene sheets may enhance the formation of strongly coupled hybrid materials with intimate, seamless electron transfer pathways, thus accelerating the electron transfer rate for the chemical desorption of hydrogen from the catalyst, further reducing the energy required for the reaction to take place,\u2019 Sasaki said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scientists are conducting additional studies to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of the interaction at the catalyst-graphene interface, and exploring ways to further improve its performance. \u00a0They have produced a paper, published in the journal,\u00a0<em>Energy &amp; Environmental Science<\/em>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2013\/ee\/c3ee40596f\" target=\"_blank\">available online<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the paper, the authors\u2014including the two high-school students\u2014conclude: \u2018This study unambiguously provides evidence that a cheap and earth-abundant transition metal such as molybdenum can be turned into an active catalyst by the controlled solid-state reaction with soybeans\u2026The preparation of the MoSoy catalyst is simple and can be easily scaled up. Its long-term durability and ultra-low capital cost satisfy the prerequisites for its application in the construction of large-scale devices. These findings thus open up new prospects for combining inexpensive biomass and transition metals\u2026to produce catalysts for electro-catalytic reactions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Very few scientific papers include a term such as &#8220;unambiguously,&#8221;
