{"id":7973,"date":"2013-07-03T11:18:24","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T18:18:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=7973"},"modified":"2013-07-07T15:46:46","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T22:46:46","slug":"pikes-peak-bikers-are-no-pikers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/pikes-peak-bikers-are-no-pikers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pikes Peak Bikers Are No Pikers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>100-percent paved for the first time in the 91 year history of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last weekend, \u00a0maybe the road&#8217;s lack of flying gravel contributed to the extremely quick times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=5881\">Chip Yates<\/a>, who had set a world record for his electric motorcycle assault on the course, did not race this year, probably involved with his<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightofthecentury.com\/\"> Flight of the Century program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Carlin Dunne performed the honor of riding the fastest on an electric motorcycle \u2013 a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lightningmotorcycle.com\/product\/performance\/\"> Lightning with an IPM liquid cooled, 125kw+, 10,000 rpm motor<\/a>, as used, according to Lightning\u2019s CEO, in the Chevrolet Tahoe.\u00a0 \u00a0Telling <em>Motorcycle.com<\/em>, \u201cIf it can push a 6,000-plus pound truck, think of its performance in a 500-pound motorcycle.\u201d CEO Hatfield says the motor units have been certified to last <em>900,000 miles<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe those specs made it the fastest of all motorcycles, even beating the Ducatis on which Dunne has set previous hill climb records \u00a0\u00a0This year, the fastest Ducati came in second, over 20 seconds behind the electric bike.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7975\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7975\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7975\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7975\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7975\" title=\"carlin-dunne-lightning-motorcycles-635x423\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carlin-dunne-lightning-motorcycles-635x423-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carlin-dunne-lightning-motorcycles-635x423-528x351.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carlin-dunne-lightning-motorcycles-635x423-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/carlin-dunne-lightning-motorcycles-635x423.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carlin Dunne shows agressive style that helped him set new world record time on Pikes Peak<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lightning established a new world\u2019s record of 215 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats, including a fast run of 218 mph.\u00a0 It might be as green as a bike can get, using solar energy to charge its EnerDel lithium batteries.\u00a0 Lightning claims it\u2019s the first racing vehicle in \u201cmajor motorsports events\u201d to leave a zero carbon footprint, although the teams that race across Australia in its famous solar races might quibble with that.<\/p>\n<p>Dunne was fairly enthusiastic about his mount.\u00a0 \u201cIts power and acceleration is like nothing I&#8217;ve ever ridden. Note dual Agni motors<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Greg Tracy was perched on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amarokracing.ca\/Home.html\">Amarok P1A<\/a>, a motorcycle built in \u201cAtlantic Canada\u201d and which attempted crowd funding to find its way to Colorado.\u00a0 The builders give credit for their design approach to aircraft designers Burt Rutan, Jack Northrop and racing car legend Colin Chapman.\u00a0 They emulate their inspirations with a \u201cmulticellular structural aluminum fuselage\u201d to gain strength with lightness.\u00a0 Their hill climber weighs only 147 kilograms (323.4 pounds), considerably less than Chip Yates\u2019 earlier record holder. The lower weight is pushed around by two Agni motors, similar to those sold for aircraft use by Electravia in France, which send 80 horsepower to the rear wheel.<\/p>\n<p>The team lists their advantages: \u201cReduced weight.\u00a0 Reduced stress.\u00a0 Reduced tooling.\u00a0 That\u2019s Amarok thinking.\u201d Reduction worked for Amarok, with Greg Tracy earning 14<sup>th<\/sup> overall with a 10:23.649 time; faster than the electric world record two years ago.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Qualifying electric motorcycle at Pike&#039;s Peak Hill Climb\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hpu2e5ibU1E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeromotorcycles.com\/press-releases\/july-02-2013-pikes-peak-international.php?stnd&amp;utm_source=zero-db&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=2013%2B25K%2BMiles%2BUS\">Zero Motorcycles<\/a> had no fewer than six entrants, including Jeff Clark (12 minutes), Jeremiah Johnson (12:05), Troy Siahaan \u2013 a Motorcycle.com editor) (12:24).\u00a0 Zero notes that all three of their top finishers were quicker than the previous electric motorcycle record time set by Chip Yates in 2011.\u00a0 Zero doesn\u2019t forget the other three team members: \u201cIn addition to the top three finishing Zero riders\u2026 Ted Rich (12:53), Nathan Barker (13:14) and Brandon Miller (13:16) set impressive times as well.\u201d\u00a0 Since the Zeros were essentially production-type bikes one can buy at a dealer, the team\u2019s performance is especially noteworthy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7977\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=7977\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7977\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7977\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7977\" title=\"zero pikes peak team\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/zero-pikes-peak-team-528x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/zero-pikes-peak-team-528x323.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/zero-pikes-peak-team-300x183.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/zero-pikes-peak-team.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zero&#8217;s Pikes Peak racing team, all on production machines<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Considering the rain and snow that slowed later runs, all of the numbers are impressive.\u00a0 Given that, a few gas guzzlers still outdid everyone this year, with an astonishing run by Peugeot-driving Sebastian Loeb, who flew up the mountain in 8:13:878 for an 87.471 mph average.\u00a0 Ryhs Millen, in another Peugeot, was over 8 mph slower \u2013 still faster than anything last year.\u00a0 All top five finishers, including the first place electric car, set the bar higher than any previous runs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"GoPro: &quot;Monster&quot; Tajima&#039;s 2013 Pikes Peak Practice Run\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5LRFPo6pymY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/monstertajima\">Nobuhiro &#8220;Monster&#8221; Tajima<\/a> came in fifth overall and first for electric vehicles with a \u00a09:46.530 time in his extreme electric Mitsubishi \u2013 not quite like the MiEV you can buy at your local dealer.\u00a0 The victory was icing on his 63<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday cake.<\/p>\n<p>With more electric entries than ever, we can certainly see a trend.\u00a0 Expect to see a larger presence of current-driven vehicles in coming contests.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Editor&#8217;s Note and Correction: Jeff Clark provided a comment that corrects the information for Greg Tracey: \u00a0&#8220;Great write-up. A small correction however, Greg Tracy was scheduled to ride the Amarok earlier in the year but he drove a Mitsubishi electric car in the race. Amarok did not finish the 12.42 mile course but came within a mile of the finish line.
