Kennedy International Airport late Saturday night was cause for elation on at least two counts.<\/p>\n<p>First, as the Solar Impulse team points out, \u201cFor the first time a plane capable of flying day and night powered exclusively by solar energy has crossed the USA from the West to the East Coasts without using a single drop of fuel.\u201d\u00a0 As we love to point out, though, it\u2019s not the first time a solar-powered airplane has made the trip.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solar-flight.com\/\">Eric Raymond<\/a> did it in 21 hops in 1990 in Sunseeker 1, using the technology available at the time \u2013 which did not allow overnight flights.\u00a0 Both trips are literally epic voyages, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>Second, for several anxious hours the flight, the airplane and even the fate of pilot Andre\u2019 Borschberg, Solar Impulse\u2019s co-founder and CEO, were threatened by an eight-foot-wide piece of torn fabric on the lower part of the left wing that luffed in the airstream, still attached to the rear spar, but exposing the structure and causing noticeable imbalance in the controls.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8000\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=8000\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8000\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8000\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8000\" title=\"Solar Impulse Final Leg Flight WashingtonDC NewYork\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Solar-Impulse-wing-in-flight_revillard-19-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Solar-Impulse-wing-in-flight_revillard-19-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Solar-Impulse-wing-in-flight_revillard-19-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over the Atlantic off the Atlantic City, New Jersey area, an eight-foot rip exposes the structure of the left wing. It obliged the team to envisage all the possible scenarios, including bailing out over the Atlantic. But this type of problem is inherent to every experimental endeavor. Photo: Solar Impulse | Merz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Andre\u2019s and Solar One\u2019s safe arrival more than compensate, however, and a news conference and \u201cFlying Laboratory\u201d event on Monday, July 8 at JFK will highlight the mission\u2019s accomplishments and the contributions of Solar Impulse partners Solvay, Schindler, Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, Bayer Material Science, Sunpower and the Swiss Government.<\/p>\n<p>Bertrand Piccard and Andre\u2019 Borschberg will ring the NASDAQ opening bell and follow that with TV interviews through the morning.\u00a0 In the afternoon, they will speak at the \u201cEconomic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Chamber in presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and Ambassador of Switzerland to the United Nations Paul Seger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Solar Impulse will be on display from July 8<sup>th<\/sup> through 15<sup>th<\/sup> at JFK in a series of private and public showings.\u00a0 One the 16<sup>th<\/sup>, it will be packed onto the specially-configured 747 that brought it to Moffett Field in April and fly back to Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The flight has elicited fascination from many who have followed its progress and found inspiration in the clean technology involved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-23195087\">According to the BBC<\/a>, \u201cAt a welcoming event when the craft reached Washington DC,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/energy.gov\/articles\/harnessing-power-sun-solar-impulse-plane-lands-dc-area\">US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz said<\/a>: &#8220;If you look at the Department of Energy&#8217;s research programs and technology visions, it involves many of the same kind of technology advances that these gentlemen have put together in an integrated system to accomplish something that would not have been thought of a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u2019I believe in 10 years we&#8217;re going to see the fruits of all these technologies changing the world.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project coincides with Piccard&#8217;s and Borschberg&#8217;s Clean Generation Initiative, an effort to encourage policy-makers and businesses to develop and adopt sustainable energy technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to Kristina Hodgson for the link to the BBC news service.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fsolar-impulse-makes-it-to-new-york-early%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s hard to believe that the Solar Impulse has been on its Cross America tour since May 3, but its early touchdown at New York City\u2019s John F.
