Over the course of the various projects we have built a wealth of experience in human performance, lightweight composite construction, and advanced aerodynamic design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their Snowbird maintained altitude for 19.3 seconds on only human power.\u00a0 Even though towed into the air, it flew on its own after the pilot released the towrope. \u00a0The beauty of this flight is so compelling the footage has been used in Honda commercials.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World&#039;s First Human-Powered Ornithopter\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eW9XsjllM6A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their record attempt streamlined bicycles are part of a series that make attempts on the human-powered land speed record. According to AeroVelo, \u201cIn both 2010 and 2011 the team set the Collegiate human-powered land speed records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=8041\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8041\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8041\" title=\"aerovelo Vortex-Composite-Image\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/aerovelo-Vortex-Composite-Image2-528x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/aerovelo-Vortex-Composite-Image2-528x209.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/aerovelo-Vortex-Composite-Image2-300x119.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/aerovelo-Vortex-Composite-Image2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_8033\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 310px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Aerovelo&#8217;s Vortex streamlined bicycle, one of a series of high-speed human-powered racers<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>This level of dedication and an obvious high level of physical fitness paid off today with AeroVelo capturing the AHS (American Helicopter Society) Sikorsky Prize &#8211; $250,000 for the first person or group to hover at an altitude of three meters for one minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team undertook initial feasibility and design studies for the \u201cAtlas\u201d in January 2012. With intermediate development through the spring, in April Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson began work full-time on the design of the helicopter with special attention to programming a full aero-structural optimizer for the helicopter rotors (a revolutionary development in the field).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AHS describes the aircraft.\u00a0 \u201cThe Atlas is larger than any operational helicopter ever constructed, based on its overall width of 58 meters (190 feet), though it weighs only 52 kilograms (115 pounds). It has four 20.4 meter (67 foot) diameter rotors that are powered by the pilot pedaling a Cervelo carbon-fiber bicycle. The Atlas project was begun in\u00a0January 2012\u00a0and made its first flight in\u00a0August 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More challenges are on the horizon.\u00a0 Since AeroVelo was only one of three teams recently flying as part of the AHS competition. The others are the\u00a0University of Maryland in College Park,\u00a0Maryland\u00a0with its Gamera II helicopter and California Polytechnic State University in\u00a0San Luis Obispo, California with its Upturn II aircraft.\u00a0 They will be taking part in future AHS competitions which are not yet made public.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Atlas Human-Powered Helicopter - AHS Sikorsky Prize Flight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/syJq10EQkog?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>AHS\u2019s International Human Powered Helicopter Competition Committee reviewed the design and flight testing of\u00a0the Atlas human powered helicopter, as well as data from its\u00a0June 13, 2013\u00a0flight. They verified that the Atlas flight met all of the requirements to win the competition and its\u00a0US$250,000\u00a0prize. AeroVelo&#8217;s Dr.\u00a0Todd Reichert\u00a0piloted and pedaled the Atlas on that flight inside The Soccer Centre in\u00a0Vaughan, Ontario.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8038\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?attachment_id=8038\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8038\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8038\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8038\" title=\"atlashlhpfjt\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/atlashlhpfjt-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/atlashlhpfjt-528x350.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/atlashlhpfjt-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/atlashlhpfjt.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Atlas nearly fills soccer field. Keeping it within bounds may have been as challenging as keeping it hovering<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AHS defined the requirements to win the AHS Sikorsky prize, \u201cfor an aircraft using only human power to fly for at least 60 seconds, reach an altitude of at least 3 meters (9.8 feet) and remain hovering over a 10 by 10 meter (32.8 by 32.8 foot) area.
