development center director Satoshi Uenoyama announced \u201ca high-capacity film-type lithium-ion battery \u201cusing a coating process that has simultaneously tripled its capacity\u00a0(compared to other Sekisui Chemical products),\u00a0increase its safety\u00a0(as a result of standard safety testing, e.g. no problems with nail penetration tests or crush tests)\u00a0and speeded up production by ten times\u00a0(compared to other Sekisui Chemical products).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company continues comparisons with its products, suggesting lithium-ion conductivity for the new battery is 10 times that of other Sekisui Chemical products.\u00a0 They claim \u201cenhanced safety\u201d through the use of a high-performance gel-type electrolyte, which because of its high viscosity, can be spread onto the battery\u2019s film materials as part of the manufacturing process.\u00a0 Sekisui claims 10 times greater productivity using this gel, which should reduce prices for future batteries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8498\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sekisui-chemical-lithium-3x-battery-flexible.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8498\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8498\" alt=\"Within limits, intricate shaping seems to be no problem\" id=\"caption-attachment-8498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Within limits, intricate shaping seems to be no problem<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The resulting battery, even with a jelly-like electrolyte, is not the jelly-roll type configuration that many cylindrical batteries resemble, but a long, wide, slim product that looks more like sheet metal or plastic. \u201cThe assumed size of film-type lithium-ion batteries,\u201d according to Sekisui,\u201d is currently 200cm long, 30cm wide, and 0.3-5mm thick (however, the size will differ according to the design capacity.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It has high volumetric energy efficiency, filling only one-third the space of an equivalent lithium-ion battery for the same energy stored.\u00a0 The company says the battery can be \u201cinstalled in any shape or form, giving rise to a large number of applications in automobiles, houses, appliances and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their hoped-for \u201coverwhelmingly high productivity\u201d is part of a company mission to help expand energy storage for homes and transportation, something they see as necessary to Japan\u2019s ongoing need for domestic energy creation, renewable energy, and clean energy utilization.<\/p>\n<p>Their research process is an aggressive one, as evidenced in their flow diagram of the technologies they are developing and their hoped-for benefits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sekisui-chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8494\" alt=\"sekisui chart\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sekisui-chart-528x126.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"126\" \u201cfrom around summer 2014, \u201cand \u201cto reach the markets in FY2015 after testing and evaluation.\u201d\u00a0 The obvious performance and economic advantages of the technology will, if they turn out to be as good as early pronouncements, have a profound effect on energy storage and application markets.<\/p>\n<p>The news has certainly been good for Sekisui, with its<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-12-03\/sekisui-chemical-jumps-to-record-on-battery-report-tokyo-mover.html\"> stock prices jumping 20 percent<\/a> on the news of its battery breakthrough.\u00a0 That should provide plenty of development capital for further research.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8495\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a
