{"id":8572,"date":"2014-01-06T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2014-01-06T19:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8572"},"modified":"2014-02-12T14:45:16","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T21:45:16","slug":"while-ev-battery-costs-decline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/while-ev-battery-costs-decline\/","title":{"rendered":"While EV Battery Costs Decline, Repurposing Adds Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/car-answers\/\"><i>Cleantechnica<\/i><\/a> has heartening news from the <i>Bloomberg New Energy Finance<\/i> report.\u00a0 Battery prices for electric vehicles, a key factor thus far in keeping electric cars more expensive to buy than smoggier alternatives, are dropping, and somewhat quickly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cAccording to an April 2012\u00a0Bloomberg New Energy Finance report, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2012\/04\/18\/ev-battery-prices-fell-14-in-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">average price of batteries used in electric vehicles dropped 14% from Q1 2011 to Q1 2012<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018The average price of an EV battery at the end of Q1 2012 was $689 per kilowatt hour, compared to $800 per kilowatt hour\u00a0in 2011, according to that report.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCompared to 2009, prices were down approximately\u00a030%.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBy 2030, BNEF projects battery prices will fall to\u00a0$150\/kWh (in 2012 dollars).\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report explains, \u201cElectric vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Motor iMiEV, Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model S require between 16 and 85kWh of storage, with a total cost of $11,200 and $34,000, or around 25% of the total cost of the vehicle.\u00a0 Battery pack prices for plug-in hybrid vehicles such as GM\u2019s Volt are on average 67% higher in terms of $\/kWh, than those for electric-only vehicles like Nissan\u2019s Leaf. This higher price is mainly due to the greater power-to-energy performance required for plug-in hybrid vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reported last year that battery manufacturing capacity exceeded demand by over 10 GigaWatt-hours (GWh), enough to power an additional 400,000 pure battery electric vehicles.\u00a0 That surplus capacity was projected to rise to 17 GWh by the end of 2013.\u00a0 Only 43,237 electric vehicles were sold in 2011, according to the report, but that number has grown over the last two years and continues to rise every month.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8574\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/battery-prices-index.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8574\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8574\" alt=\"As EV sales rise, battery prices decrease\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/battery-prices-index-528x433.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/battery-prices-index-528x433.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/battery-prices-index-300x246.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/battery-prices-index.jpg 679w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As EV sales rise, battery prices decrease<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Steven Chu, U. S. Secretary of Energy from January, 2009 to April, 2013, had set several ambitious goals, \u201cpartnering with industry\u201d to decrease, for example, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) battery prices from their 2008 level of $12,000 for a typical 40-mile pack to $3,600 by 2015 and to $1,500 by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk has predicted EV battery costs of $200 per kWh in the \u201cnot-too-distant future,\u201d but that was in 2012.\u00a0 Whether through policy-making initiatives, improved manufacturing techniques, or market forces, EV battery prices continue to drop as EV acceptance grows.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond initial cost of purchase, the EV provides its owner with savings in operating costs, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).\u00a0 In 2012, the group completed a comprehensive survey of fuel and environmental costs of electric vehicles, and found that EV drivers can save $750 to $1,200 per year over fuel costs of an average (27 mph) gasoline vehicle.\u00a0 The EV driver will save an additional $200 per year for every 50-cent rise in gasoline prices.<\/p>\n<p>The UCS notes that putting solar panels on the house or garage will reduce operational costs further by providing \u201cfree\u201d electricity for charging EVs, along with running the house.\u00a0 Alan Soule, a CAFE Foundation board member, did just that.\u00a0\u00a0 A contractor, Alan powers his house and two Teslas (roadster and Model S) with sunshine.<\/p>\n<p>To extend the service life of his car batteries, he is considering using the spent cells from his cars to store energy collected by his solar roof to power the house at night and through extended cloudy weather.\u00a0 This is a solution Nissan proposes for Leaf buyers, along with ways to make the Leaf a backup power supply.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8575\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-battery-prices-Nissan-Leaf-Vehicle-to-Building-0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8575\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8575\" alt=\"Leafs line up to power building, get recharged when electricity costs drop\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-battery-prices-Nissan-Leaf-Vehicle-to-Building-0-528x285.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-battery-prices-Nissan-Leaf-Vehicle-to-Building-0-528x285.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-battery-prices-Nissan-Leaf-Vehicle-to-Building-0-300x162.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-battery-prices-Nissan-Leaf-Vehicle-to-Building-0.jpg 645w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leafs line up to power building, get recharged when electricity costs drop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the Nissan Advanced Technology Center in Atsugi City, Japan, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carscoops.com\/2013\/12\/nissan-leaf-batteries-used-to-power.html\">\u201cVehicle-to-Building\u201d program <\/a>has saved operating costs for the Center since July.\u00a0 Six employee-owned Leafs are plugged into the building\u2019s power distribution system every work day and feed energy from their batteries into the building.<\/p>\n<p>By phasing charging during \u201coff-peak\u201d hours, the cars can be recharged inexpensively, and will always be ready to drive home every evening.\u00a0 But during high-cost periods for electricity, the Leafs supply power to the building.\u00a0 According to Nissan, the building reduced outside power use 25.6 kilowatts during peak summer periods.\u00a0 (It would be nice to know over what time.)\u00a0 This gave a net 2.5-percent reduction in the use of outside power during peak hours, and a savings of 500,000 Yen ($4,864) per year.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan claims the program had \u201cno impact on the workers\u2019 daily commute, or their vehicles.\u201d\u00a0 The first point seems reasonable, but the second begs the question of whether this increased cycling of the batteries reduces their lifetime usefulness in running up clean driving miles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8573\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/EV-batttery-prices-Vehicle-to-Home-Electric-Car-Battery-Backup-System.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8573\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8573\" alt=\"Nissan's Leaf-to-Home system, similar to Ford's home system.
