{"id":8751,"date":"2014-03-20T14:17:40","date_gmt":"2014-03-20T21:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8751"},"modified":"2014-03-20T14:17:40","modified_gmt":"2014-03-20T21:17:40","slug":"reaching-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/reaching-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaching for the Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarstratos.com\/lancement-du-projet-solarstratos\/\">SolarStratos<\/a>, a two-seat, solar-powered airplane, is being readied for record flights in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, just a 25-minute drive from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarimpulse.com\/\">Solar Impulse <\/a>hangars in Payerne.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8752\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/solar-stratos-screenshot_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8752\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8752\" alt=\"High in the stratosphere, SolarStratos could carry near-space tourists or scientific payloads\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/solar-stratos-screenshot_3-528x330.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/solar-stratos-screenshot_3-528x330.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/solar-stratos-screenshot_3-300x187.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/solar-stratos-screenshot_3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High in the stratosphere, SolarStratos could carry near-space tourists or scientific payloads<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Its makers claim that it is the first commercial solar two-seater aircraft in history, and will be the first solar-powered airplane with a pilot to enter the stratosphere.\u00a0 These heady claims are described on the project\u2019s web site as a \u201ccrazy bet,\u201d but it\u2019s too early to make such judgments.\u00a0 Calin Gologan of PC-Aero GmbH designed the base craft, an expansion of his earlier ultralight electric aircraft,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aircraft-certification.de\/index.php\/elektra-two-standard-record.html\"> Elektra Two<\/a>.\u00a0 The \u201cRecord\u201d version of this craft, despite SolarStratos&#8217; extended 20-meter (65 feet, 7 inch) wingspan, weighs a feathery 140 kilograms (308 pounds) empty, and only 350 kilograms (770 pounds) loaded, \u00a0including 80 kilograms (176 pounds) of batteries and 20 square meters (215.28 square feet) of thin-film solar cells set into the wing and horizontal tail surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>With a span loading of only 11.7 pounds per foot, the craft is in sailplane territory, necessary to allow it to take off and climb with a mere 13.5 kilowatt (18 horsepower) motor swinging a three-bladed propeller for motive power.\u00a0 This low power concerns your editor, who notes that the mission includes a climb to 75,000 feet in four hours, similar to the mission profile of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perlanproject.org\/\">Perlan 2,<\/a> which will use wave energy off the Andes Mountains and the Polar Vortex to reach 90,000 feet without any on-board power plant.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mission SolarStratos - to the Edge of Space - Launch 2014\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ah2ZrlOwoeI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Loaded weight includes the pilot, Rapha\u00ebl Domjan, a self-described \u201ceco-adventurer and conference speaker,\u201d who completed the first solar-powered around-the-world voyage on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetsolar.org\/\"> MS T\u00fbranor PlanetSolar<\/a>, a 31-meter catamaran with 512 square meters (5511 square feet) of solar panels covering its upper decks.\u00a0 That trip convinced him to take the next step \u2013 into near space.<\/p>\n<p>According to the project\u2019s web site, \u201cIt was during the Atlantic crossing on board PlanetSolar that the idea came to him of fulfilling the mythical flight of Icarus and approaching space by\u00a0using solar energy.
