{"id":8764,"date":"2014-03-25T23:18:32","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T06:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8764"},"modified":"2014-03-25T23:18:32","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T06:18:32","slug":"dr-shin-keynote-electric-aircraft-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/dr-shin-keynote-electric-aircraft-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Shin to Keynote Electric Aircraft Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Jaiwon Shin, NASA Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, will close the Friday, April 25 session of the eighth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium with his keynote address, &#8220;The NASA Aeronautics Vision and Strategy \u2013 How It Relates to Electric Aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_8765\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-interns_hq_visit_640x425.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8765\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8765 \" alt=\"text\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-interns_hq_visit_640x425-528x396.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-interns_hq_visit_640x425-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-interns_hq_visit_640x425-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-interns_hq_visit_640x425.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Shin (front, center) meets with students from NASA Langley Research Center in this 2010 photo. &#8220;Dr. Shin and the others seemed to be genuinely interested in our work at NASA Langley and gave great words of encouragement and advice after our presentations,&#8221; said [one of the students]. &#8220;They really made me feel as if I were contributing toward the future of NASA.&#8221;<\/p><\/div><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span>As Associate Administrator, Dr. Shin \u201cmanages the agency\u2019s aeronautics research portfolio and guides its strategic direction,\u201d according to his official NASA biography.\u00a0 He co-chairs the National Science &amp; Technology Council\u2019s Aeronautics Science &amp; Technology Subcommittee, a group of federal departments and agencies that fund aeronautics-related research.<\/p>\n<p>Its first presidential policy for aeronautics research and development (R&amp;D) was ratified by Executive Order 13419 in December 2006, and now guides such research until 2020.\u00a0 Dr. Shin oversees and sets policies for an array of explorations into aerodynamics, propulsion, air traffic control \u2013 including NextGen, aviation safety, and the integration of such technologies into broader economic and strategic concerns at the national and international levels.<\/p>\n<p>With myriad Aeronautics Research Mission Directorates (ARMD) and at least 37 such agreements with foreign countries, NASA hopes to lead efforts to \u201csolve the challenges that still exist in our nation&#8217;s air transportation system: air traffic congestion, safety and environmental impacts.\u201d\u00a0 Directing these diverse efforts requires a person great skill and intellect.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8766\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-nasa-three-planes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8766\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8766\" alt=\"dr shin nasa three planes\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-nasa-three-planes-528x378.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-nasa-three-planes-528x378.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-nasa-three-planes-300x215.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dr-shin-nasa-three-planes.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA\u2019s Dr. Jaiwon Shin will have a large role in determining the look of future air travel<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Very much in line with the CAFE Foundation\u2019s goals, NASA\u2019s endeavors will bring an enhanced aviation environment.\u00a0 \u201cThrough green aviation, NASA is helping create safer, greener and more effective travel for everyone. Our green aviation goals are to enable fuel-efficient flight planning, and reduce aircraft fuel consumption, emissions and noise.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Below, we see one of the shortest and most exciting Ted Talks ever, by the \u00a0Green Flight Challenge\u2019s winning team leader, Jack Langelaan.\u00a0 Dr. Shin will help develop the transition from what Dr. Langelaan calls the \u201cLindbergh Moment\u201d of the 2011, NASA-funded Green Flight Challenge to technologies that will help that moment become the arc of the future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TEDxPSU - Jack Langelaan: NASA Green Flight Challenge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rA7o9eMhsjw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He should be the ideal candidate to oversee that transition.\u00a0 Dr. Shin\u2019s entry into his current position brought this statement from NASA Administrator Michael Griffin in 2008: \u201cJaiwon brings expert knowledge of aeronautics and technology to a critical position at NASA. He&#8217;s helped develop the aeronautics research roadmap for the 21st century. His leadership of the directorate will assure our continued recognition as the world&#8217;s premiere aeronautics research organization.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His education and previous experience make him a highly-qualified administrator.\u00a0 According to his NASA biography, \u201cDr. Shin received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. His bachelor&#8217;s degree is from Yonsei University in Korea and his master&#8217;s degree is in mechanical engineering from the California State University, Long Beach. His honors include NASA&#8217;s Outstanding Leadership Medal, NASA&#8217;s Exceptional Service Medal, a NASA Group Achievement Award, Lewis Superior Accomplishment Award, three Lewis Group Achievement Awards, and an Air Force Team Award. He is a graduate of the Senior Executive Fellowship Program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
