{"id":8789,"date":"2014-04-01T10:07:58","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T17:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8789"},"modified":"2014-04-01T10:07:58","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T17:07:58","slug":"electric-tugs-sea-tac-lower-costs-emissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/electric-tugs-sea-tac-lower-costs-emissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Tugs at Sea-Tac Lower Costs, Emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.greenaironline.com\/news.php?viewStory=1840\"><em>Green Air Online<\/em><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> reports that Seattle-Tacoma Airport (Sea-Tac) has launched a \u201c$31 million project to provide nearly 600 electric charging stations for ground support equipment (GSE) such as baggage tugs, bag ramps and pushback vehicles.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Besides saving \u201caround $2.8 million in airline fuel costs,\u201d the conversion will reduce greenhouse gas emissions around 10,000 tons per year.\u00a0 Alaska Airlines will swap 204 fossil-fuel burning GSEs to electric and its partner Horizon Airlines will trade in 58.\u00a0 More airlines are going to join the program later this year.\u00a0 Federal grants and funding from the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sweeten the transition for participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project provides the infrastructure for airlines to convert their vehicles from diesel to electric in Sea-Tac\u2019s effort to become the first major airport in the US to provide charging stations at all gates,\u201d said Courtney Gregoire, Co-President of the Port of Seattle Commission. \u201cAs many as 650 vehicles could eventually be covered by electric technology and make a huge difference to the airport\u2019s carbon footprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8790\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/seatac-gse-charging-stations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8790\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8790\" alt=\"Bright yellow charging stations flank Sea-Tac's concourses and serve a variety of electric GSEs\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/seatac-gse-charging-stations-528x296.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/seatac-gse-charging-stations-528x296.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/seatac-gse-charging-stations-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/seatac-gse-charging-stations.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8790\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bright yellow charging stations flank Sea-Tac&#8217;s concourses and serve a variety of electric GSEs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Yellow \u201ccharging corrals\u201d flank the airport\u2019s \u201cC\u201d and \u201cD\u201d concourses, with 296 plug-in fast charging stations available in the first phase of the project.\u00a0 When completed, the installation will total 576 such stations.<\/p>\n<p>Most electric GSEs can run about two and a half days without recharging, and take advantage of lulls in airport activity to \u201ctop up\u201d their energy levels.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Electric Ground Service Equipment at Sea-Tac Airport\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/30B3EmnRSBQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationpros.com\/news\/11354224\/seatac-goes-green-with-electric-gse\">Tacoma, Washington <i>News Tribune<\/i> reports<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> the conversion to electric ramp vehicles is part of a larger program to cut fossil-fuel use at Sea-Tac.\u00a0 Last year, for instance, the airport installed a central conditioned air system \u201c that ended the practice of aircraft running their jet-fuel-powered auxiliary power units at the gate to keep the planes&#8217; interiors heated and cooled while they are being loaded and unloaded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, the aircraft are connected with flexible ducts that provide heated or cooled air directly to the planes&#8217; interiors from the airport&#8217;s central heating and cooling plant. That program is saving airlines about $15 million in fuel costs and 40,000 tons of emissions annually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That and \u201c\u2019the airport&#8217;s new fleet of compressed natural gas-powered buses serving its rental car terminal and its high-efficiency hybrid or CNG taxis have made Sea-Tac one of the nation&#8217;s most environment-friendly airports,\u2019 said airport director Mark Reis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Jeff Butler, Alaska Airlines&#8217; vice president of airport operations and service, noted that, &#8220;At first there was some skepticism, but these vehicles have proven themselves in snow and rain and every weather condition,&#8221; and are now a hit with airline employees and ramp workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">According to the paper, \u201cDave Soike, Sea-Tac&#8217;s director of facilities, said other airlines including Southwest, United and Delta have expressed interest in converting their ground fleets to electric power.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Electric GSEs produce no local pollution, are quieter, and require less maintenance than their fossil-fuel powered predecessors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Even the airport garage have 48 electrical vehicle recharging stations, \u201cthe most of any North American airport,\u201d according to Sea-Tac officials.\u00a0 The airport does not charge for charging, incorporating that in its normal parking fees.\u00a0 Sea-Tac hopes to fund an upgrade to 220 Volts for these now somewhat slow charging stations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With wheel drives finding their way through their various countries\u2019 certification systems, electric ground support will play a vital part in helping reduce the fumes around airplanes on ramps at major airports.\u00a0 Passengers will welcome the clean air.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Felectric-tugs-sea-tac-lower-costs-emissions%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
