{"id":8806,"date":"2014-04-13T13:44:37","date_gmt":"2014-04-13T20:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8806"},"modified":"2014-04-13T19:28:33","modified_gmt":"2014-04-14T02:28:33","slug":"solar-impulse-2-ready-take-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/solar-impulse-2-ready-take-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Impulse 2 Ready to Take on the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Even while the first Solar Impulse was scaling the Alps, traversing the Moroccan desert, and crossing America, skilled craftsmen and women were designing and building Solar Impulse 2, a larger, heavier solar-powered airplane rolled out this week. \u00a0Its next challenge, that of flying around the world, will test the limits of even this seasoned team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">As shown on the first Solar Impulse\u2019s flights, \u201cFlying the Solar Impulse aircraft is quite different from being at the commands of any other airplane.\u00a0Flight tactics, piloting skills, aerodynamics had to be re-learned from scratch.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8807\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Solar-Impulse-2-COMPARAISON-Si2-BOEING.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8807\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8807  \" alt=\"Slightly longer wingspan than Boeing 747, 1 percent of the mass. Illustration courtesy Solar Impulse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of the difference comes from the aircraft\u2019s huge size and light weight.\u00a0 Solar Impulse shares this:\u00a0 \u201cHere\u2019s a fun fact for you to understand how special this aircraft is: the wingspan of Si2 is bigger than that of a Boeing 747, but the former\u2019s weight is just slightly more than 1% of the latter (remember: the weight of a car)!\u201d\u00a0 This jumbo-jet sized craft has all the performance of an ultralight, but with such large surface areas and nowhere near the maneuverability.\u00a0 Its maximum bank angle of 5\u00b0, for instance, limits its turns to very large circles in the sky.\u00a0 It will take off at 26 knots (29.9 mph) in 165 yards (150 meters) and cruise at a legal U.
