{"id":8834,"date":"2014-04-29T14:01:55","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T21:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8834"},"modified":"2014-04-29T14:01:55","modified_gmt":"2014-04-29T21:01:55","slug":"dr-ajay-misra-leads-hit-eas-viii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/dr-ajay-misra-leads-hit-eas-viii\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Ajay Misra Leads Off With a Hit at EAS VIII"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not to indulge in hyperbole, but people who missed the eighth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium will, like the laggards mentioned in Henry V\u2019s speech, \u201cthink themselves accurs&#8217;d they were not here\u201d\u00a0 (Shakespeare, <i>Henry V, act 4, scene III<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>After the Friday morning introductions by Dr. Brien Seeley, founder and president of the CAFE Foundation, things immediately went into high gear with the presentation by Dr. Ajay Misra, NASA Glenn Research Center. \u00a0A member of the Senior Executive Service, he is Chief of the Structures and Materials Division in the Research &amp; Technology Directorate.\u00a0 In this position, Dr. Misra has the responsibility for planning, advocating, coordinating, organizing, directing and supervising all phases of Division research and business activities.<\/p>\n<p>His degrees in metallurgy, an MBA degree and a doctorate in materials science and engineering demonstrate the high intellectual skills necessary to manage the 120 employees and 100 contractors in Dr. Misra&#8217;s Division.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8837\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/misra-at-podium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8837\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8837\" alt=\"Dr. Ajay Misra holds forth on the technological and mechanical challenges at the nanoscale. Photo courtesy CAFE Foundation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His discussion on \u201cNano-Magnets and Additive Manufacturing for Electric Motors\u201d implied NASA\u2019s great interest in researching and testing nanomaterials in flight structures and Dr. Misra\u2019s strong interest in electric aircraft, decreasing the weight and volume of electric components, and improving the materials involved.\u00a0 He discussed the basics of motor construction, including magnets, conductors and insulation; and the necessity for keeping things cool by managing the thermal buildup in motors through proper selection of materials\u00a0 and cooling technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Along with an advanced topology for the motor\u2019s configuration; better, lighter, more powerful units require advances in permanent magnets.\u00a0 Dr. Misra traced the evolution of materials used in magnets, starting with ferrite magnets almost from their beginning, advancing to alnico (aluminum-nickel-cobalt), on to samarium-cobalt (SM-CO) the first of the rare-earth materials used in motors and instrumental in the Boucher Brothers\u2019 successful early solar-powered models), and neodymium-iron-boron ( Nd-Fe-B \u2013 the most widely used of the rare earth magnets).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Misra took it one step further, explaining that nano-composite magnets allow even stronger magnetism and better <i>coercivity<\/i>, the magnet\u2019s ability to retain its magnetism while withstanding an external magnetic\u00a0or\u00a0electric field.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/semiconductors\/nanotechnology\/the-incredible-pull-of-nanocomposite-magnets\">The IEEE expands on that<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.\u00a0 \u201cTo find out how magnetically hard something is, physicists measure the strength of the coercive field, the reverse-directed magnetic field that&#8217;s required to erase the material&#8217;s magnetization completely. The greater the coercive field, the better, because magnets always work in a hostile magnetic environment, one that tends to demagnetize them. The rub here is that materials with strong coercive fields don&#8217;t usually have much magnetic oomph\u2014which is to say that at best, they exhibit modest saturation magnetizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To enable best use of nanostructured permanent magnets, Dr. Misra relies on advanced topology design for the motor, combining soft phase, high magnetic saturation materials and Hard phase, Nd-Fe-B high coercivity materials in alternating hard and soft magnet layers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8835\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Ball_mill.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8835\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8835\" alt=\"typical operation of ball mill, which uses rotation within a cylinder to grind materials to rounded form. In Dr. Misra&#8217;s application, this takes place at a microscopic level<\/p><\/div>\n<p>His team faced several fabrication challenges in making a uniform mixture of hard and soft magnetic materials at the nano-scale.\u00a0 Aligning anistropy axes for instance, required making thin film magnets that could reach a theoretical maximum energy product of 54 MGOe\u2019s (Mega Gauss Oersteds; unit of measure typically used in stating the maximum energy product for a given material).<\/p>\n<p>Advanced processing techniques included high-energy ball milling to produce nanoparticles of uniform sizes, and using additive manufacturing to manufacture a motor stator.\u00a0 Note the video below is not as shown by Dr. Misra, but is typical of the direct writing process used on permanent magnet motors crafted by the NASA technicians \u2013 but at a much larger scale.\u00a0 Dr. Misra\u2019s team made 50 micron lines that crossed over a 500 micron trench, for instance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ultimaker 3D Printing a stator\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-M-CMQbNUwc?start=14&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 3D printing of the motor\u2019s electromechanical system, the potential to increase the maximum energy product in magnets, new electromagnet design, and the reduced volume, weight and cost of the resulting motor all show a promising direction for future electric aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>More reports to come.\u00a0 The Symposium was an educational and inspirational event which CAFE wants to share with everyone.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fdr-ajay-misra-leads-hit-eas-viii%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not to indulge in hyperbole, but people who missed the eighth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium will, like the laggards mentioned in Henry V\u2019s speech, \u201cthink themselves accurs&#8217;d they were not here\u201d\u00a0 (Shakespeare, Henry V, act 4, scene III).
