{"id":8968,"date":"2014-06-01T23:21:52","date_gmt":"2014-06-02T06:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8968"},"modified":"2014-06-02T08:19:18","modified_gmt":"2014-06-02T15:19:18","slug":"solar-impulse-2-makes-premier-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/solar-impulse-2-makes-premier-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Impulse 2 Makes Premier Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarimpulse.com\/en\/our-adventure\/solar-impulse-2\/#.U4wWXvldWSo\">Solar Impulse HB-SIB<\/a>, the second aircraft from the program headed by Andre\u2019 Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, took to the skies early this morning piloted by Markus Scherdel.\u00a0 Taking off from Payerne Airport at 3:38 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) Solar Impulse 2 climbed to a randomly orbiting path within a 20-mile compass of the airfield to the southwest, Lake Neuchatel to the north, and Belleville to the northeast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Solar Impulse 2 Airplane First Flight - Maiden Flight Best-Of\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yUpyuORoB8o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At about 4:01 GMT, and about 5,300 feet, Scherdel reported a slight vibration and briefly leveled off until determining that it was probably an aerodynamic vibration \u2013 not a motor issue, but possibly from a hatch door.\u00a0 He continued climbing and performed a bank angle test of 5\u00b0 at varying airspeeds and \u201ca steady heading sideslip\u201d to determine that controllability and stability were OK.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:47 GMT the team\u2019s web site reported, \u201cFlight Director is quite happy: no problem has been detected on the electrical and propulsion system, stability of airplane is good.\u00a0 After one hour of flight&#8230; all very positive signs given we&#8217;re an experimental aircraft!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a series of descents and brief climbs, with a final return to Payerne at 5:52 GMT. \u00a0Since the two-hour, 14-minutes flight took place mostly with the sun still low on the horizon, HB-SIB apparently relied on battery power, a good test of the on-board energy reserves.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Construction of Solar Impulse 2, the Round-The-World Solar Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oNMBPJpaimc?list=PL-tY-9eGABwz5NKQY7C6vnzciWGL-F_mq\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Pinchon of the project included these quotes in Monday morning&#8217;s press release:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;<em>This inaugural flight is an important stage &#8211; a step closer towards the round-the-world flight. It is the first aircraft which will have almost unlimited endurance,&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0highlighted Andr\u00e9 Borschberg, Solar Impulse Co-founder, CEO and pilot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;<em>Throughout such an innovative project, each stage is a leap into the unknown. Today suspense was at a high!
