{"id":8978,"date":"2014-06-04T07:54:44","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T14:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=8978"},"modified":"2014-06-04T07:54:44","modified_gmt":"2014-06-04T14:54:44","slug":"eas-viii-klaus-ohlmann-conquers-everest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/eas-viii-klaus-ohlmann-conquers-everest\/","title":{"rendered":"EAS VIII: Klaus Ohlmann Conquers Everest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Klaus Ohlmann says the sailplanes and solar-powered aircraft in which he has set several world records are powered by a \u201cgravitational engine with an external fusion reactor.\u201d\u00a0 He has been on a sun-stoked roll the last few years.\u00a0\u00a0 His recounting of the epic journey first to fly a Stemme motorglider from Germany to Katmandu, and then to conquer Mount Everest in a sailplane, kept the eighth annual Electric Aircraft Symposium audience enthralled.\u00a0 That feat alone would be enough for admiration, but his seemingly never-ending series of adventures provoke a bit of awe.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8979\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ohlmann-everest-map.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8979\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8979\" alt=\"Epic journey in a motorglider, Germany to Nepal took a bit longer than planned\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ohlmann-everest-map-528x296.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ohlmann-everest-map-528x296.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ohlmann-everest-map-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Ohlmann-everest-map.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Epic journey in a motorglider, Germany to Nepal took a bit longer than planned<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountain-wave-project.com\/index.html\">Mountain Wave Project (MWP)<\/a>, a group which explores high-altitude weather systems to verify theoretical considerations.\u00a0\u00a0 As stated in the MWP\u2019s web site, it is \u201ca project of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pa.op.dlr.de\/ostiv\/\" target=\"_blank\">scientific and meteorological panel<\/a>\u00a0of OSTIV (Organisation Scientifique et Technique du Vol \u00e0 Voile) \u2026conceived during an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pa.op.dlr.de\/ostiv\/Activities\/serres98.htm\" target=\"_blank\">OSTIV seminar<\/a>\u00a01998 in Serres\/France by Ren\u00e9 Heise and Klaus Ohlmann and attracted several enthusiastic scientists\/pilots since.\u201d\u00a0 He holds the world\u2019s absolute distance record in a sailplane \u2013 3,008 kilometers (1,865 miles), flown along the Andes in 2003 in a Schemp-Hirth Nimbus 4 DM.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Glider Pilots to Reach Mt. Everest\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fxlbxdYTPZE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He and Eric Raymond flew e-Genius to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/offices\/oct\/early_stage_innovation\/centennial_challenges\/general_aviation\/index.html\">second place finish in the Green Flight Challenge <\/a>in September, 2011.\u00a0 He set <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/klaus-ohlmann-sets-new-solar-records\/\">several records in Icare 2<\/a>, a 25-meter (82-feet) wingspan, solar-powered airplane while flying around the French Alps.<\/p>\n<p>Klaus later flew e-Genius again, to first place in the 2013 Green Speed Cup and also set a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenspeedcup.de\/news\/longest-flight-by-an-electric-aircraft\/\">world distance record for electric aircraft<\/a> \u2013 252 miles \u2013 during that event.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New chapter of Aviation History: Discover M.Everest with Klaus Ohlmann in a glider.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ATnNWnlLuT8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The flight to Nepal came about because Klaus determined it was easier to fly there than to ship the airplane by container ship and meet up with it.\u00a0 The Stemme SV-10T, after all, is a real airplane and a real sailplane, with excellent capabilities in either mode.\u00a0 With six hours endurance and 1,200 kilometer (744 mile) range possible Klaus could make big jumps on his way to the high mountains on the border of China.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8980\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ohlmann-everest-WE+ARE+IN+HIMALAYA+11+12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8980\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8980\" alt=\"Klaus Ohlmann and Anssi Soila savor the joy of being on top of the world\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ohlmann-everest-WE+ARE+IN+HIMALAYA+11+12-528x396.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ohlmann-everest-WE+ARE+IN+HIMALAYA+11+12-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ohlmann-everest-WE+ARE+IN+HIMALAYA+11+12-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ohlmann-everest-WE+ARE+IN+HIMALAYA+11+12.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8980\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Klaus Ohlmann and Anssi Soila savor the joy of being on top of the world<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He and Anssi Soila, a private investor and pilot, <a href=\"http:\/\/missionhimalaya.com\/about-the-expedition\/\">took on the mission for the MWP and the DLR<\/a> (the German space agency) \u201cto explore turbulence parameters in and above the highest valleys and mountains, vertical momentum transfer and the diurnal anabatic flow in the complex terrain. Investigation of ozone and carbon dioxide levels is also being considered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They carried out \u201csome measurements over some of the glaciers using airborne optical methods (DLR-MACS). This part of the expedition is in co-operation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal.
