S. interests.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/batteryuniversity.com\/learn\/article\/availability_of_lithium\">Battery University<\/a> says 70-percent of the world\u2019s supply is in Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Australia and China.\u00a0Bolivia\u2019s salt flats are in a mostly inaccessible area and would require building of major roads and extraction facilities.\u00a0 Unfortunately that country is not on good terms with the United States.\u00a0\u00a0 China will want to protect its own drive to build electric vehicles for the world market. \u00a0America has limited supplies in Nevada, which are of great interest to Tesla motors, which will build its \u201cgigafactory\u201d in that state.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9320\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/western-lithium-site.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9320\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9320\" alt=\"Potential lithium mine site in King Valley, Nevada\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/western-lithium-site-528x218.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/western-lithium-site-528x218.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/western-lithium-site-300x124.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/western-lithium-site.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Potential lithium mine site in Kings Valley, Nevada<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Possibly with anticipated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rgj.com\/story\/news\/2014\/04\/06\/tesla-factor-recharging-nevadas-lithium-industry\/7354627\/\">demands from Tesla<\/a> and the growing portable electronic market, Western Lithium is beginning production at the first of several planned projects, costing up to $300 million in mining and plant operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Between 2000 and 2010, lithium prices shot up tenfold \u201cbefore stabilizing at $6,000 per ton in recent years,\u201d according to the U. S.-based Lithium Exploration Group.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernlithium.com\/news-items\/4827\">Western Lithium i<\/a>s counting on that increasing demand to justify its planned production of \u201cup to 26,000 tons per year of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE).\u201d\u00a0 The company claims this level of production will meet lithium demand for between 500,000 t over 1 million electric cars, depending on battery sizes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9321\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Uppsala-Battery.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9321\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9321\" alt=\"Uppsala's battery can come from recycled and organic materials, then be recycled itself\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Uppsala-Battery-528x293.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Uppsala-Battery-528x293.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Uppsala-Battery-300x166.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Uppsala-Battery.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Uppsala&#8217;s battery can come from recycled and organic materials, then be recycled itself<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the ongoing threat that lithium supplies may wither through geopolitical friction, recycling may be as good for batteries as it is for beer cans.\u00a0 Researchers at Uppsala University\u2019s \u00c5ngstr\u00f6m Laboratory in Sweden have created a type of battery that uses remainders from lithium cells that have run their course, and combined those with organic ingredients including pine resin and alfalfa.\u00a0 According to the university, \u201cThe scientists have shown that the lithium extracted from a spent battery can be used for a new battery: all that needs to be added is more biomaterial. Their battery proved capable of delivering as much as 99% of the energy output from the first.
