{"id":9341,"date":"2014-10-10T14:46:44","date_gmt":"2014-10-10T21:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9341"},"modified":"2014-10-10T14:46:44","modified_gmt":"2014-10-10T21:46:44","slug":"new-british-club-hpas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/new-british-club-hpas\/","title":{"rendered":"A New British Club for HPAs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">For the last six decades, the <a href=\"http:\/\/aerosociety.com\/About-Us\/specgroups\/Human-Powered\">Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS)<\/a> has overseen records keeping for human powered aircraft (HPAs).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">They report, \u201cThe Man Powered Aircraft Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society originated in 1959 when the members of the Man Powered Group of the College of Aeronautics at Cranfield were invited to become a group of the Society. Its title was changed from &#8216;Man&#8217; to &#8216;Human\u2019 in 1988 in recognition of the many successful flights by woman pilots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9343\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-gossamer-albatross.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9343\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9343\" alt=\"Bryan Allen perilously close to English Channel waters as he pedals toward France, July 17, 1979\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-gossamer-albatross-528x337.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-gossamer-albatross-528x337.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-gossamer-albatross-300x191.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-gossamer-albatross.jpg 1071w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bryan Allen perilously close to English Channel waters as he pedals toward France, July 17, 1979<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Henry Kremer turned the wistful dreams of many to serious competition by donating over 275,000 pounds sterling ($440,000 at today\u2019s exchange rates) in prize money for achievements such as flying a figure eight around to markers a half-mile apart and starting and finishing 10 feet above the ground \u2013 won by Paul MacCready, the airplane\u2019s designer and Brian Allen, the pilot.\u00a0 The won their 50,000 pound prize on August 23, 1977, and scored a second win on June 12, 1979 by flying the Gossamer Albatross 22 miles across the English Channel.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BHPFC Human Powered Flight Rally 2014. &quot;Airglow&quot; in practise flight.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1vGMpJ59L1o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The RAeS hopes to promote human-powered flight as \u201ca Practical Sport For designers these machines offer a most exciting challenge.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The group notes that \u201cultra lightweight materials have revolutionized techniques of construction, producing aircraft with a wingspan of around 25 meters (82 feet), and an all up weight of little over 30 kilograms (66 pounds).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier machines were built of spruce, balsa, and filmy fabrics, and were able to fly in only utterly still conditions because of their fragility.\u00a0 But the RAeS believe that we have reached a transitional stage, with the next stage leading to \u201cmore practical aircraft, which can be built by a group of enthusiasts and flown as a sport.\u201d\u00a0 Although the slow flight and long wingspans require a refined and special type of piloting skill, \u201cit has become less necessary for the pilot to be a highly trained athlete. Anyone is a potential HPA pilot. One of the ultimate aims of the Group is to promote human powered flight as an Olympic sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Recently, Fred To, Dr. Bill Brooks, Chris Roper and Malcolm Whapshott formed the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bhpfc.org.uk\/\">British Human Powered Flying Club<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> \u201cto advance the sport of flying HPAs.\u201d\u00a0 Fred To is Chairman of this group and Dr. Brooks is Chairman of the RAeS HPA group.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9342\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-Ist-Rally-posteremail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9342\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9342\" alt=\"Promotional poster for 2015 Lasham Human-Powered Airplane Rally showing participants in 2014 Rally\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-Ist-Rally-posteremail-528x373.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-Ist-Rally-posteremail-528x373.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-Ist-Rally-posteremail-300x211.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-Ist-Rally-posteremail.jpg 1701w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Promotional poster for 2015 Lasham Human-Powered Airplane Rally showing participants in 2014 Rally<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The RAeS sponsored the 2012 and 2013 Icarus Cup Rallies and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightglobal.com\/news\/articles\/human-powered-flying-club-to-maintain-uk-summer-meet-tradition-with-june-july-lasham-399054\/\">the BHPFC staged a 2014 Rally<\/a> at Lasham Airfield in Hampshire and are promoting their 2015 meet to again be held at Lasham from July 25 through August 2.<\/p>\n<p>The rally this year included the following contests:<\/p>\n<p>1) Duration.<\/p>\n<p>2) A 200-meter sprint race.<\/p>\n<p>3) A 1-kilometer race.<\/p>\n<p>4) A 500-meter slalom course.<\/p>\n<p>5) Distance around a triangular course.<\/p>\n<p>6) Unassisted takeoff performance.<\/p>\n<p>7) Landing accuracy task.<\/p>\n<p>Videos and images from the 2014 event suggest more of a cooperative and collegial event than a competitive one, but this is a sport that is just finding its way at this point. \u00a0\u00a0One contestant suffered an embarrassing takeoff accident, but the simplified construction of modern HPAs allows relatively inexpensive and quick repairs to be made.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9344\" style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/BHPFC-BionicBat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9344\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9344\" alt=\"Paul MacCready's Bionic Bat combined human, electric power.
