{"id":9352,"date":"2014-10-14T08:34:44","date_gmt":"2014-10-14T15:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9352"},"modified":"2014-10-14T08:34:44","modified_gmt":"2014-10-14T15:34:44","slug":"speedy-range-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/speedy-range-anxiety\/","title":{"rendered":"Speedy &#8211; and No Range Anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Breaking a record that stood for 26 years, a team of University of<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unsw.edu.au\/news\/science-technology\/it%E2%80%99s-official-electric-car-world-record-smashed-unsw-sunswift\"> New South Wales engineering students have gained FIA recognition <\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">for their 500 kilometer (310 mile) drive at an average speed of 106.966 kilometers per hour (66.32 mph) in their solar-powered Sunswift automobile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de l&#8217;Automobile (FIA), world motorsport\u2019s governing body, ratified the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fia.com\/sites\/default\/files\/basicpage\/file\/20141003\/Category%20A.pdf  \">record for the run set by the team in July<\/a>.\u00a0 The old record was 73 km\/hr. (45.26 mph), making the new record a decisive advancement in electric vehicle technology.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UQiaqHscpOg<\/p>\n<p>The new record is particularly impressive because it\u2019s set by students, more than 100 of whom contributed to the project over the last two years.\u00a0 Students are now working on their fifth car, eVe, to be built and raced since the team was founded in 1996.\u00a0 The University\u2019s press release noted, \u201c\u2019It&#8217;s not often you can confidently say you made history before you even graduated,\u2019 Sunswift\u2019s project director and third-year engineering student Hayden Smith said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/sunswift.com\/eve.html\"> Sunswift web site lists the following specifications<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> for the car:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exterior: TeXtreme Carbon fibre constructed by Core Builders.<\/li>\n<li>Solar Panels: C60 Sunpower silicon solar cells. High efficiency (22.7%) and lightweight.<\/li>\n<li>Encapsulation: Solbian high performance encapsulation (polymer protection for the solar cells).<\/li>\n<li>Motor: 2 Maran in-hub motors developed by the CSIRO. Low power high efficiency by electric car standards.<\/li>\n<li>Battery: Panasonic NCR 18650 A and B.<\/li>\n<li>Suspension: Front Bilstein Ohlins. Rear TTX25 spring damper.<\/li>\n<li>Wheels: Front: GH Craft carbon front wheels. Rear: 7075 Aluminum wheels.<\/li>\n<li>Tires: Michelin Radial X tires specifically designed for solar cars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that none of this is extreme technology. \u00a0University and student budgets probably contributed to the \u201coff-the-shelf\u201d nature of the package, generously supplemented by <a href=\"http:\/\/sunswift.com\/sponsors.html\">sponsors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electric Car World Record Attempt - UNSW Team Sunswift\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ihwmtRQngcc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Capable of 140 km\/hr.
