{"id":9383,"date":"2014-10-25T16:20:11","date_gmt":"2014-10-25T23:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9383"},"modified":"2014-10-25T16:44:32","modified_gmt":"2014-10-25T23:44:32","slug":"solar-impulse-wrapping-flight-tests-heading-abu-dhabi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/solar-impulse-wrapping-flight-tests-heading-abu-dhabi\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Impulse Wrapping Up Flight Tests before Heading to Abu Dhabi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Solar Impulse 2, HB-SIB, flying now for several months, is being readied for a trip to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates and host city for Solar Impulse\u2019s around-the-world flight.\u00a0 From there, early in 2015, it will embark on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarimpulse.com\/en\/our-adventure\/the-first-round-the-world-solar-flight\/?utm_source=site&amp;utm_medium=slider&amp;utm_content=slide2509&amp;utm_campaign=rtw#.VEj9C_l4rec\">around-the-world flight<\/a>, alternately flown by Bertrand Piccard and Andre\u2019 Borschberg.<\/p>\n<p>The program continues the drive and immense logistical planning evidenced by Solar Impulse 1\u2019s across-America flight last year.\u00a0 \u201c<i>What better way to demonstrate the importance of the pioneering, innovatory spirit than by achieving \u2018impossible\u2019 things with renewable energy and highlighting new solutions for environmental problems?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Construction of Solar Impulse 2, the Round-The-World Solar Airplane\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oNMBPJpaimc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This attitude will be necessary to overcome the challenges of five-day, cross-ocean flights each pilot will face, and to meet the meteorological conditions following the equator much of the way.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger, heavier SI2 will cross deserts, the Great Wall of China, and repeat its journey across America on its five-month circumnavigation of the globe.\u00a0 Beginning in March, 2015 from Abu Dhabi, Solar Impulse will make stops in Asia, the United States, southern Europe and North Africa before returning to the host city in July, 2015.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9387\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/solar-impulse-2-team-revillard_400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9387\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9387\" alt=\"Solar Impulse 2 will require a great ground game, too, with a team to match\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/solar-impulse-2-team-revillard_400-528x352.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/solar-impulse-2-team-revillard_400-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/solar-impulse-2-team-revillard_400-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/solar-impulse-2-team-revillard_400.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar Impulse 2 will require a great ground game, too, with a team to match<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As with Solar Impulse 1\u2019s flight to Morocco in June 2012, the move to depart from and arrive in Abu Dhabi has symbolic import.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlying to Morocco\u2019s Ouarzazate region is filled with symbolism\u00a0as it is both Solar Impulse&#8217;s and the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy\u2019s (MASEN\u2019s) common message:\u00a0to invest in innovative projects today for job creation and sustainable growth tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abu Dhabi and Masdar, that country\u2019s renewable energy company, will host Solar Impulse as it prepares for its flight.\u00a0 The big plane will be delivered by cargo plane late in the year and begin test flights and training in January.\u00a0 It will also be showcased during the World Future Energy Summit as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which is hosted by Masdar between January 17 and 22, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The Solar Impulse blog reports, \u201c<i>This well-matched partnership will show Abu Dhabi to be a center of expertise when it comes to renewable energy and at the same time Solar Impulse will demonstrate the far-reaching applications of clean energy during the first solar-powered flight around the world,<\/i>\u201d declared Bertrand Piccard.
