{"id":9559,"date":"2014-12-24T11:25:29","date_gmt":"2014-12-24T18:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9559"},"modified":"2014-12-24T11:25:29","modified_gmt":"2014-12-24T18:25:29","slug":"hybrid-motorized-ultralight-sailplane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/hybrid-motorized-ultralight-sailplane\/","title":{"rendered":"A Hybrid Motorized Ultralight Sailplane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Dr. Paul Robertson of the University of Cambridge has been sorting out the necessary components and relationships to make hybrid-electric-gasoline aircraft a practical reality for the last several years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His Photonics and Sensors group at the University researches many areas of optics and electronics, including holography and \u201cnano-photonic structures,\u201d with hybrid flight last on the long list of studies.\u00a0 The blog has been reporting on his aeronautical activities since 2009, including what turned out to be <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/a-tale-of-three-pauls\/\">the second and third electric aircraft flights in England<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/launching-on-a-leaf-blower-and-a-hacker\/\">first flight of an electric-gas hybrid<\/a> in a modified Alatus motorglider.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9560\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hybrid-Aircraft-Is-Powered-by-an-Electric-Motor-and-a-Petrol-Engine-468244-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9560\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9560\" alt=\"Dr. Paul Dewhurst (right) inspects very compact hybrid power system \" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hybrid-Aircraft-Is-Powered-by-an-Electric-Motor-and-a-Petrol-Engine-468244-5-528x290.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hybrid-Aircraft-Is-Powered-by-an-Electric-Motor-and-a-Petrol-Engine-468244-5-528x290.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hybrid-Aircraft-Is-Powered-by-an-Electric-Motor-and-a-Petrol-Engine-468244-5-300x164.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Hybrid-Aircraft-Is-Powered-by-an-Electric-Motor-and-a-Petrol-Engine-468244-5.jpg 1136w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Paul Dewhurst (right) inspects very compact hybrid power system<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The current aircraft uses larger power components and is a bit more sophisticated.\u00a0 In fact, an external view would not give away the uniqueness of what nests inside.\u00a0 Its operation has a unique flavor, too \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/watts-up-aeroplanes-go-hybrid-electric\">it\u2019s the first ever, according to reports, that can recharge its batteries in flight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Planes go hybrid-electric\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VAjbfevv9D0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The parallel hybrid system, built by Cambridge technicians, can pull power from the gas engine and the electric motor simultaneously to drive the propeller, and uses up to 30-percent less fuel \u201cthan a comparable plane with a petrol-only engine.\u201d\u00a0 During take-off and climb, when maximum power is required, the modified Honda engine and custom lightweight motor work together to power the plane, \u201cbut once cruising height is reached, the electric motor can be switched into generator mode to recharge the batteries or used in motor assist mode to minimize fuel consumption. The same principle is at work in a hybrid car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge\u2019s Engineering Department designed and built a power electronics module to \u201ccontrol the electrical current to and from the batteries &#8211; a set of 16 large lithium-polymer cells located in special compartments built into the wings. The petrol engine is optimally sized to provide the cruise power at its most efficient operating point, resulting in an improved fuel efficiency overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The demonstration aircraft is based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.songairplane.com\/song\/\">Czechoslovakian \u201cSong\u201d ultralight<\/a>, a slim twin-boom machine available in an electric-only version from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electraflyer.com\/electraflyer-uls.php\">ElectraFlyer in the United States<\/a>, and in its \u201cpetrol\u201d version in Canada from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.melody-aircraft.com\/\">Melody Aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Robertson analyzes why we haven\u2019t seen a hybrid aircraft before now.\u00a0 \u201cAlthough hybrid cars have been available for more than a decade, what\u2019s been holding back the development of hybrid or fully-electric aircraft until now is battery technology. \u00a0Until recently, they have been too heavy and didn\u2019t have enough energy capacity. But with the advent of improved lithium-polymer batteries, similar to what you\u2019d find in a laptop computer, hybrid aircraft \u2013 albeit at a small scale \u2013 are now starting to become viable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Funding came from Boeing, a member of Sustainable Aviation, a UK group committed to a net reduction in CO2 emissions of 50 percent 2005 levels by 2050. \u00a0Marty Bradley, Boeing\u2019s principal investigator for the program, explains, \u00a0\u201cOur mission is to keep our sights on finding innovative solutions and technologies that solve our industry\u2019s toughest challenges and continually improve environmental performance.\u00a0 Hybrid electric is one of several important elements of our research efforts, and we are learning more every day about the feasibility of these technologies and how they could be used in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Test flights for the project took place at the Sywell Aerodrome, near Northampton, with Paul Dewhurst, Robertson\u2019s long-time electric flying partner, doing the honors.
