{"id":9576,"date":"2015-01-06T19:03:37","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T02:03:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9576"},"modified":"2015-01-07T07:11:28","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T14:11:28","slug":"japans-first-electric-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/japans-first-electric-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan\u2019s First Electric Aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/global.jaxa.jp\/\">JAXA, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, <\/a>has been developing a multi-discipline approach to creating an electric light aircraft, much like efforts at Airbus.\u00a0 Like Airbus, its first efforts use a modified existing airframe, the Diamond Dimona HK36 TTC-ECO motorglider.\u00a0 Unlike Airbus, the organization has developed its own powerplant, reporting on March 14, 2014, that they had completed performance testing of the electronic propulsion system for small aircraft, in a final test program that lasted into late 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>JAXA reports, \u201cFor the tests, researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aero.jaxa.jp\/eng\/research\/frontier\/feather\/news140331.html\">installed an aircraft motor system designed by JAXA <\/a>in a 6.5-m x 5.5-m low-speed wind tunnel and measured motor shaft power, motor efficiency, propeller thrust, the temperatures of various motor system parts, and other values.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9577\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-motor-installed-jaxa600x400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9577\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9577\" alt=\"JAXA's internally-developed motor in Diamond HK36TTC-ECO. Note battery pods under wings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The data showed that the system had a maximum motor output of 63 kW (kilowatts) and motor efficiency levels of 94% or higher, indicating that the motor demonstrates sufficient performance for manned flight. Technology to extend the time duration of motor\u2019s maximum power is imperative for the practical use of an electric aircraft.\u201d\u00a0 The insulated coil enables a smaller, lighter motor that will not overheat during periods of high motor output, such as climbs.\u00a0 Materials for the coil were developed by Nippon Kayaku (KAYAKU), in cooperation with JAXA.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9580\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-feather01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9580\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9580\" alt=\"Highlights of JAXA FEATHER development flight vehicle, a modified Diamond motorglider\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-feather01.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-feather01.jpg 500w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-feather01-300x112.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Highlights of JAXA FEATHER development flight vehicle, a modified Diamond motorglider<\/p><\/div>\n<p>JAXA has installed a complete electric power system in the Diamond aircraft, with some pertinent enhancements which distinguish their approach.\u00a0 Most notable, from a quick glance, a large pod under each wing holds the batteries that supply power to the motor. \u00a0The pods, totaling 120 kilograms (264 pounds), allow a test program with takeoff and climb at full power for one to two minutes, a trip around the field at pattern altitude (300 meters or 984 feet) using from 20 to 30 kilowatts (27 to 40 horsepower), followed by a landing.\u00a0 The pods, being deployed as they are, may provide a safety factor in case of thermal runaways with the batteries.<\/p>\n<p>The batteries themselves are 75 Amp-hours, 128 Volts, and arranged with 32 cells in series.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9581\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-schematic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9581\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9581\" alt=\"Battery pods feed single motor, although untranslated diagrams leave questions\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/jaxa-schematic.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Battery pods feed single motor, although untranslated diagrams leave questions<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aero.jaxa.jp\/eng\/publication\/magazine\/pdf\/en_fp_no0304.pdf#page=8\"><i>Flight Path<\/i>, JAXA\u2019s newsletter<\/a>, describes the permanent magnet synchronous motor as being equivalent to the 60 to 86 kW (80.4 to 115.2 horsepower) Rotax engines it replaces, with control through a single throttle lever.\u00a0 Because the motor turns over at a maximum 8,000 rpm, a reduction gear system slows things down for reasonable propeller speeds.\u00a0 Although the propeller is a variable-pitch unit, it will be restricted to fixed-pitch use during tests.\u00a0 An insulated-gate bipolar transistor\u00a0(IGBT) controller modulates the water-cooled motor\u2019s speed.<\/p>\n<p>JAXA lists the aircraft\u2019s cruising speed between 100 and 150 kilometers per hour (62 \u2013 93 mph), with a single battery charge capable of powering the 850 kilogram (1,870 pound) craft through a 15-minute flight routine, \u201ceven if the pilot applies full power for around two minutes during takeoff.\u201d\u00a0 Following each circuit, the airplane will be recharged to ready it for another airport circuit.\u00a0 The test team uses a long runway \u201cso that the aircraft can glide and return to the ground safely in the event that it experiences a loss of power during takeoff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Airbus, JAXA intends to use the results of their FEATHER (Flight demonstration of the Electric Aircraft Technology for Harmonized Ecological Revolution) light aircraft tests as indicators of how electronic technology may power bigger aircraft in the future.\u00a0 This may include hybrid variants including hydrogen fuel cells.\u00a0 As one writer pointed out, Japan is dependent on foreign oil to run its current air fleet.
