{"id":9592,"date":"2015-01-15T11:43:18","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T18:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9592"},"modified":"2015-01-15T11:43:35","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T18:43:35","slug":"gogoro-batteries-hydrogen-scooter-canisters-energy-distribution-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/gogoro-batteries-hydrogen-scooter-canisters-energy-distribution-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Gogoro Batteries, Hydrogen Scooter Canisters \u2013 Energy Distribution in the Future?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">One of the hits of the Consumer Electronics Show at Reno, Nevada this year was the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.evworld.com\/news.cfm?newsid=34838\">Gogoro scooter, an electrical and electronics showcase for its designers and makers<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.\u00a0 The stylish two-wheeler, a svelte and quiet people mover, reminds one of the Vespa craze of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but does not belch a blue cloud or emit putta-putta (or papapapa as shown in the vintage commercial here) noises in its wake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ffKpGbMU8ns<\/p>\n<p>Its clean white lines reflect the kind of look we\u2019ve come to expect from modern devices such as laptops, game consoles or other electronic toys.\u00a0 That might be expected because of Horace Luke\u2019s background as a product designer for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.htc.com\/us\/\">HTC<\/a>, Nike and Microsoft.\u00a0 To some extent, the Gogoro includes a full menu of thoroughly modern touches, from its wrap-around lights to its information displays.<\/p>\n<p>Luke and co-founder Matt Taylor started Gogoro initially to build electric scooters, but both have more products in mind and a fascinating scheme to keep their vehicles charged up.\u00a0\u00a0 Luke explains, &#8220;Gogoro is more than a startup. This is the start of an industry. Our products and business model will impact a variety of consumer areas to create a metropolitan ecosystem with better connectivity, easier access to energy, and a more enjoyable urban living experience.\u201d\u00a0 This confidence and broad vision might come from the $150 million in capital the company has raised, some of it from HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Smartscooter Intro: A Ride Like No Other | Gogoro\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2DG8h8fs8Jw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gogoro\u2019s Panasonic batteries, neatly packaged in quickly swappable packages, will be available in charging centers around the urban areas where the scooters might be popular.\u00a0 <i>EV World<\/i> noted the similarity of their way of distributing those batteries to the system developed by Asian Pacific Fuel Cells for keeping its hydrogen fuel cell scooters scooting.\u00a0 In neither case can a user charge the scooters at home, but must \u201csubscribe\u201d to a network of stations where fresh energy can replace the spent hydrogen or battery cartridges.\u00a0 This might seem like a major deal breaker for the battery electric scooter, which otherwise could be easily plugged in at home.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9594\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/gogoro-with-charging-station.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9594\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9594\" alt=\"Gogoro scooter with batteries (left), charging station. a smart network connecting rider with the scooter and a support network<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The scooter has a \u201cKit\u201d car-like persona, with sweeping lights to indicate activation, Bluetooth connectivity to help a rider communicate with his or her mount, and over three million possible combinations of personalization options to make each scooter the owner\u2019s own.\u00a0 What can\u2019t be one\u2019s own are the battery packs, a way to keep riders coming back for more.\u00a0 This provides an advantage of always having a fresh battery without the inevitable degradation of performance and replacement costs associated with owning the packs.\u00a0 Batteries weight 20 pounds each and provide up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) range.<\/p>\n<p>Owners can communicate with their Gogoro\u2019s cell phone app via Bluetooth, and the scooter\u2019s on-board near field communications (NTC) system talks to the many components of the scooter and to the battery charge stations. \u00a0A rider can always find the nearest available fresh battery.\u00a0 The claimed ability of the scooter to \u201clearn\u201d the rider\u2019s habits can enhance mileage from each battery pack, with 12 percent increases in endurance claimed after the Gogoro learns its master\u2019s ways.<\/p>\n<p>Several commentators have noted that you\u2019re not buying a scooter, but a transportation system, with Gogoro owning the charging stations and batteries, and making it as convenient as possible to interact with that system.\u00a0 This is not the only such program, Taiwan having a competitor in the Isuda City Cruiser electric scooters from <a href=\"http:\/\/evworld.com\/news.cfm?newsid=32850\">Kenfa Advanced Technology Corporation <\/a>and which has been active since April, 2014.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Very much like the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/swapping-rather-than-recharging\/\">hydrogen-canister swap-out<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> for <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hydrogencarsnow.com\/blog2\/index.php\/hydrogen-scooters\/apfct-hydrogen-scooters-update\/\">scooters from APFCT<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, The Gogoro\u2019s battery distribution scheme ensures ongoing \u201cfuel\u201d sales for the manufacturer, with a way, at least in the confines of an island, of allowing freedom of mobility for riders. \u00a0Neither does much for cleaning up the smog generated by the two-strokers they would replace unless the electricity used to recharge or fill their hydrogen canisters comes from a clean source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a parting shot, here\u2019s a video showing the distribution of hydrogen canisters in Taiwan \u2013 again, a more likely scenario within the constraints of an island.\u00a0 The potential to use a few more of the canisters to power a very light car are intriguing, and again, lightweight components like this may have applications in ultralight aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Discovery APFCT only\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RRUWjXVUlLc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
