{"id":9692,"date":"2015-03-03T14:23:12","date_gmt":"2015-03-03T21:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=9692"},"modified":"2015-03-06T12:00:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-06T19:00:27","slug":"9692","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/9692\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Impulse 2 \u2013 The Bikes Chasing the Airplane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Solar Impulse 2, now preparing for its imminent attempt at an around-the-world voyage, has made three flights in Abu Dhabi, one maintenance test to check operation of the huge craft, and one training flight each for the adventure\u2019s pilots, Andre&#8217; Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Solar Impulse Airplane First Test Flight in Abu Dhabi - #Insider\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UcSlvFZUnpU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In almost every video of HB-SIB\u2019s takeoffs and landings, two or three cyclists can be seen chasing the Solar Impulse, causing one curious viewer to ask <em><a href=\"http:\/\/evworld.com\/news.cfm?newsid=29862\">EV World<\/a><\/em> what kind of bikes they are.\u00a0 Of course, they are electrically-enhanced, fitting the project, and Swiss, part of Solar Impulse\u2019s national pride.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9693\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stromer-ST-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9693\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9693\" alt=\"Stromer ST-1, the bike that chases Solar Impulse all over the world\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stromer-ST-1-528x440.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stromer-ST-1-528x440.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stromer-ST-1-300x250.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Stromer-ST-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stromer ST-1, the bike that chases Solar Impulse all over the world<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stromerbike.com\/en\/us\">Stromer bicycle<\/a> is an advanced machine, with a rear wheel-hub motor, removable battery pack, and connectivity through a smart phone interface.\u00a0 There is some conflict between the guesstimate of which model the Solar Impulse team uses by EV World\u2019s editor, who is himself involved with electric bicycle sales, and the specifications set forth by Stromer.<\/p>\n<p>EV World\u2019s editor shared the following.\u00a0 \u201cI soon learned the answer after querying the Solar Impulse team: It was a\u00a0Stromer\u00a0electric bike and I am guessing it is the 600W, 36V ST1 Platnium, which breaks the typical European convention of limiting electric assistance to 250 watts or about one-third horsepower. The ST1 Elite does meet EU e-bike technical standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesigned by the Swiss and built, like most e-bikes today, in Asia, the Stromer ST1 Platinum uses a 600W rear hub motor and Samsung lithium-ion batteries to help propel its rider up to 48 km\/h (31 mph), which is well over the 25 km\/h limit set by the European Union for pedal-assisted bicycles. So, while chasing the Solar Impulse down the runway is on the ST1 Platinum is perfectly legal, riding it at that speed down your typical European street definitely isn&#8217;t. In the US, a 750W motor is legal, but the assisted top speed is limited to 20 mph, so you could also run afoul of the law on this side of the Atlantic, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9694\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/stromer-e-bike-feature-slide-740x450px-st1-integration.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9694\" class=\"size-large wp-image-9694\" alt=\"Neatly packaged battery pack can be key-locked into frame, preventing, or at least slowing down, battery theft. Cells are Samsung 18650 units<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stromer indicates the ST1 has a choice of motors ranging from 250 to 500 Watts (.335 to 0.67 horsepower), and torque from 20 to 40 Newton meters (14.75 to 29.5 foot-pounds).\u00a0 It includes a 36 Volt battery pack that comes in two sizes \u2013 398 Watt hours or 522 Wh.\u00a0 The smaller pack weighs three kilograms (6.6 pounds), and the larger pack can provide 40 to 100 kilometers (25 to 62 miles) range with a 70 kilogram (154 pound) rider and a sensor sensitivity setting of 3.\u00a0 These types of settings are managed by the rider through a three-button control system, which also allows use of regenerative braking for increased range.<\/p>\n<p>Cycling laws throughout America vary widely, so local ordinances may not permit use of these imports.\u00a0 In the meantime, off-bike charging and electronic controls reflect the kind advanced thinking that may lead to hub motors for ultralight takeoff assistance, or even electrically-enhanced flight for human-powered aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, they look so cool speeding after the giant solar-powered airplane.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2F9692%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Solar Impulse 2, now preparing for its imminent attempt at an around-the-world voyage, has made three flights in Abu Dhabi, one maintenance test to check operation of the huge craft, and one training flight each for the adventure\u2019s pilots, Andre&#8217; Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard.
