And Carplane<sub>\u00ae<\/sub>\u00a0is the world&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><i>only<\/i><\/strong>\u00a0flying car currently undergoing formal certification. Watch this page as we complete the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the \u201cautomated\u201d features on the design as originally conceived included a wing that pivoted out from its storage between the twin fuselages and attached itself to the central assembly.\u00a0 The builders have apparently retained that feature, although it must add considerable weight.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aopa.org\/News-and-Video\/All-News\/2015\/April\/21\/German-firm-readies-flying-car?tid=B43JKWJ900iyTmtU_xqU8g\">AOPA reports<\/a>, \u201cWhile it might seem that the wings need to be detached manually, actually the conversion is automated. The wings fold scissors-like, departing the wing attach points and stacking behind the cockpits, then move forward into their storage space. This prevents what the Carplane Web site indicates is a crosswind problem when wings are folded but extend upward from the vehicle while driving. So the <a href=\"http:\/\/carplane.de\/1st-to-market\/the-challenge\/\">challenge<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t \u2018making a car fly\u2019, it\u2019s \u2018making it safe enough to get\u00a0<b>certification\u2019<\/b>\u201d.\u00a0 (Again, the bold emphasis is Carplane\u2019s.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9882\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/carplane-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9882\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9882\" alt=\"Carplane ready for the Autobahn, with wings tucked neatly in ostensibly drag-reducing configuration\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/carplane-2.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/carplane-2.jpg 420w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/carplane-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carplane ready for the Autobahn, with wings tucked neatly in ostensibly drag-reducing configuration<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With a flying length of 7.453 meters (24 feet, 5 inches), and a driving length of 5.44 meters (17 feet, 10 inches) , Carplane\u2019s tail section must slide in and out a bit like the tail section on the <a href=\"http:\/\/pal-v.com\/\">PAL-V<\/a>\u00a0One, essentially a flying autogyro.<\/p>\n<p>Its 9.715 meter wing (31 feet, 10 inches) has sailplane-like airfoils based on the wing\u2019s root shapes stored between the two fuselages, and it has 10.72 square meters (115.4 square feet) of area.\u00a0 The airfoils must have some reasonably high lift coefficient to allow a stall speed of 36 knots (41.4 mph), comparable to a Cessna 150\/152 with 160 square feet of wing area.<\/p>\n<p>An empty weight of 498 kilograms (1,097 pounds) and maximum takeoff weight of 750 kilograms (1.653 pounds) puts it solidly in the 150\u2019s ball park.\u00a0 The 151 horsepower PC850 engine may account for the projected rate of climb of 351 meters per minute (1,150 feet per minute), something even a lightly loaded 150 could only aspire to.<\/p>\n<p>The engine, originally mounted in a pod above the fuselages, is now hidden between them, which allows for quieter operation, according to references quoted by Carplane.\u00a0 The gear system to drive both the rear wheel on each fuselage and turn the propeller when in takeoff and flight mode must be another instance of clever design. \u00a0Using the rear wheels to help accelerate the takeoff run is an idea being promoted for upcoming Green Flight Challenges. \u00a0Carplane claims a takeoff distance of only 85 meters (297 feet) using this extra push.<\/p>\n<p>As a car, the machine would run on the Autobahn at speeds up to 174 kilometers per hour (108 mph).\u00a0 With the required airbags and other safety gear, weight will have to be monitored very carefully.<\/p>\n<p>If Carplane can keep the weight within European LSA standards and obtain the performance they now predict, they will have lived up to their rhetoric.\u00a0 The at-least four-way competition has different configurations, design philosophies, and myriad details. \u00a0We look forward to what comes next.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fcarplane-makes-comeback%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The German firm Carplane made an entry into the media a few years ago, especially when it compared its bi-modal flying car with a Burt Rutan design.\u00a0 That started a brief kerfuffle of edgy comparisons between the two groups, but no necessary winner.\u00a0 Now, having shown at least a finished and apparently drivable vehicle at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,14],"tags":[6128,1234,6131,1451,6130,6129,99,419,1164,6127,4529],"class_list":["post-9878","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-gfc","category-sustainable_ga","tag-aeromobil","tag-aopa","tag-autobahn","tag-carplane","tag-certification","tag-flying-cars","tag-green-flight-challenge","tag-light-sport-aircraft","tag-lsa","tag-pal-v-one","tag-terrafugia"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
