Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and IBM Canada\u2019s Research and Development Centre.\u00a0 His spray equipment, composed of a \u201cspray nozzle used in steel mills to cool steel with a fine mist of water, and a few regular air brushes from an art store,\u201d manages to spread colloidal quantum dots with the precision usually found in atomic layer deposition managed in laboratory or carefully-controlled manufacturing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>He admits to the unaesthetic look of the setup, but notes that the $1,000 sprayLD system (a play on the manufacturing process called ALD, or atomic layer deposition), can take the place of expensive batch manufacturing processes normally used to coat materials.<\/p>\n<p>His sprayLD \u201d blasts a liquid containing CQDs directly onto flexible surfaces, such as film or plastic, like printing a newspaper by applying ink onto a roll of paper. \u201c\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The solar-collecting QCDs \u201ccould be used to coat all kinds of weirdly shaped surfaces, from patio furniture to an airplane\u2019s wing. A surface the size of your car\u2019s roof wrapped with CQD-coated film would produce enough energy to power three 100-Watt light bulbs\u2014or 24 compact fluorescents.\u201d\u00a0 The implications for an airplane, with its large wetted area covered with the film include range extension for an electrically-powered aircraft, or all-day soaring for a motorglider.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"sprayLD - New technique offers spray-on power\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q7DZzufHy1o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kramer has reported his progress in papers in the journals<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.201403281\/abstract\">Advanced Materials<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.light.utoronto.ca\/edit\/files\/adma201403281.pdf\">Applied Physics Letters<\/a><\/em>, showing \u201cthat the sprayLD method can be used on flexible materials without any major loss in solar-cell efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBC reports, \u00a0\u201c\u2019As quantum dot solar technology advances rapidly in performance, it\u2019s important to determine how to scale them and make this new class of solar technologies manufacturable,\u2019 said Professor Ted Sargent (ECE), vice dean, research in the Faculty of Applied Science &amp; Engineering at University of Toronto and Kramer\u2019s supervisor. \u2018We were thrilled when this attractively manufacturable spray-coating process also led to superior performance devices showing improved control and purity.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University reports, \u201cIn a third paper in the journal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/nn505343e\">ACS Nano Letters<\/a><\/em>, Kramer and his colleagues used IBM\u2019s BlueGeneQ supercomputer to model how and why the sprayed CQDs perform just as well as\u2014and in some cases better than\u2014their batch-processed counterparts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/technology\/sprayld-coats-various-surfaces-with-energy-producing-solar-cells-1.2867170\">Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) reports<\/a> that the spray-on\u2019s efficiency is not quite the 10 percent needed to become commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019We&#8217;re close,&#8221;
